Poker has been a popular pastime since at least the first half of the 19th century when it originated in North America. Today, there is a long row of different poker variants to chose among, and most of them belong to one of the four categories listed below.

Straight poker games
Straight poker games are the earliest form of poker and they are sometimes referred to simply as old-fashion poker games. They are not very popular today since they are based chiefly on luck rather than skill. In the most common version, each player receives five cards. You can see all your own cards but none of the cards belonging to the other players. The dealing of the cards is followed by a betting round. You are not allowed to exchange any cards and there will be no community cards to help you out. After the betting round, each player that is still in the game (i.e. who betted) reveals his or her hand and the pot goes to the player with the best poker hand. This old version of poker is quite similar to European games such as Three Card Brag and Primero.

Stud poker games
Stud poker games involves more strategic decisions than straight poker games since they use a combination of face-up and face-down cards. Exactly how many face-up and face-down cards each player receives vary between the many stud poker variants. You will not receive all your cards at once; instead their will be a deal (a “stud”) followed by a betting round, followed by another deal, followed by a betting round, and so on. Examples of popular stud poker games are 7 Card Stud and 5 Card Stud. In 7 Card Stud, each player receives three face-down cards and four face-up cards. In 5 Card Stud, there are four face-up cards and one face-down cards.

Draw poker games
In draw poker, you get one or several chances of improving your poker hand by discarding one or several cards and have them replaced by new cards from the deck. You must therefore make strategic decisions regarding which cards to hold on to and which ones to discard. In 5 Card Draw, one of the most commonly played draw poker games, each player gets five cards to start with and can look at all of them. After a round of betting, each player may discard anywhere from 0 to 5 cards and receive new cards from the deck. There will then be another round of betting before showdown.

Community card poker games
In this category, you will find famous poker variants like Texas Hold’em and Omaha High. What they all have in common is that they are played with open community cards on the table. Each player may use these community cards to form his or her poker hand. Each player will also receive personal cards from deck that are to be kept hidden from the other players. A game of Texas Hold’em starts with each player being dealt two cards. For more strategies on Texas Holdem, visit After a betting round, three open community cards are placed on the table. A new betting round commences, before a fourth open community card is placed on the table. A new betting round takes place, followed by a fifth open community card on the table. If there are still any players in the hand, a final betting round takes place before showdown. Including any of the community cards in your poker hand is not mandatory in Texas Hold’em.
